Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes are a National Hockey League team located in Raleigh, North Carolina and are members of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference.
The franchise was established in 1971 as the New England Whalers, which was renamed the Hartford Whalers after joining the NHL in 1979. The team then moved to North Carolina for the 1997-98 season and became the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes play their home games at PNC Arena, which opened at the start of the 1999 season, meaning the team did not have their own home for their first two season in North Carolina. The Hurricanes were forced to play 90 minutes away from Raleigh, in Greensboro where they struggled to draw fans.
The Carolina Hurricanes have seem some success since the move south. The Hurricanes reached the Stanley Cup finals in the 2001-02 season, losing to the Detroit Red Wings, but then won the Stanley Cup championship after beating the Edmonton Oilers in the 2005-06 season.
