Winnipeg Jets
The Winnipeg Jets are a National Hockey League team located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The Jets are currently members of the Central Division in the Western Conference, playings their home games at the MTS Centre.
The city of Winnipeg originally was granted one of the founding franchises for the World Hockey Association in 1972. The original Jets were one of four WHA teams to join the NHL in 1979. The first incarnation of the Jets would move to Phoenix Arizona to become the now Arizona Coyotes for the 1996-97 season.
The current franchise was founded in 1999 as an expansion team, the Atlanta Thrashers. After 12 years of poor performance and financial struggles, the Thrashers were sold and relocated to Winnipeg for the 2011-12 season, taking the name of the original WHA franchise and becoming the new Winnipeg Jets.
