Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a Major League Baseball franchise located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The franchise was established in 1882, then known as “Allegheny” due to the name of the area where the team played. Prior to the 1891 season, the team signed an unprotected player from the Philadelphia Athletics in a move that was called “piratical” by a league official. The team was not found of any wrongdoing, but decided to run with the allegations and renamed themselves the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team is often nicknamed the “Bucs,” short for Buccaneer, which is another name for a pirate.

The Pirates moved from Three Rivers Stadium to PNC Park in 2001, with their new home considered one of the best ballaprks in the league to attend a game. The Pirates are members of the National League East division, and have won nine National League pennants and five World Series championships. The most recent of each came in 1979. The Pirates won three division titles in the early 1990s before falling into a 20 year stretch of consecutive losing seasons before earning a Wild Card birth in 2013. In 2015, the Pirates became the fourth franchise in league history to lose 10,000 games as well as the seventh franchise to win 10,000 games.
