Venue History
Tropicana Field, sometimes referred to as “The Trop,” has been home to Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Rays since their inaugural season in 1998. The stadium, however, had opened in 1990 and was built in hopes to eventually get a baseball franchise. Before being home to the Rays, the stadium was home to the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League for 3 seasons while their own arena was build constructed.
The stadium includes a touch tank where fans can learn about, pet, and feed cownose rays in a 35-foot, 10,000 gallon tank. Tropicana Field's most unique and well known feature are the four catwalks that circle the roof of the dome. These catwalks have been hit by many balls, resulting in rulings of outs, dead balls, and home runs, depending on which catwalk is struck.
