Venue History

The original Yankee Stadium was the home of the New York Yankees in the Bronx, New York City, New York from 1923-1973 and 1976-2008. It was known as “The House That Ruth Built,” as it was the first three deck stadium and opened with a capacity of 58,000, nearly double of other stadiums at that time due to the popularity of Babe Ruth. The stadium was closed for significant renovations during the 1974 and 1975 seasons. The legend of Yankee Stadium grew over its 85 year history as it was home to some of the most well known players in baseball history, like Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Derek Jeter.

Many believe the ghosts of Yankee past resided at Yankee Stadium, as there was little other explanation for how the Yankees pulled off some of their miraculous performances. Monument Park, which holds the retired numbers and plaques of Yankee greats, was moved to the new Yankee Stadium after the original stadium was closed in 2008 with hopes the ghosts will make their way across the street to continue the Yankee legend.
